How do I stop my cat scratching everything except her scratch-post?
I have two two-year old cats. One seems to be acting out at the moment and has taken to scratching my carpets and furniture while turning a blind eye to her scratch post. I have tried spraying the carpets with citrus spray (which I was told would act as deterrent), I have even bought something called "Get Off" which is a citronella based pet repellant. (She just finds another area to scratch). I have sprayed her scratch post with extra catnip to try make it more appealing. She uses it when she feels like it, but it is not her "scratch area of choice".
She has lots of cat toys, her own basket, etc etc and spends lots of time playing, chasing etc her sister - so I'm not sure what is causing this pent-up frustration that is being taken out on my carpets and furniture.
Any ideas please?
I know this might sound strange, but I actually had to 'train' my cat how to use the scratch post. When I saw him stretch out his legs against the side of the couch like he wanted to dig his claws into it, I made a sharp hissing noise, clapped, stomped, did something to scare him a little. He would jump and run away. Also, when he stretched against his scratch post like he was going to use it, I spoke to him in a high-pitched 'good kitty' voice. If he scratched his post, I would run my fingers down his back like a massage and he really seemed to enjoy that. After awhile, he lost interest in the couch and started using the scratch post regularly, even without the praise & massage.
There are many products to help with this problem, but, just as you've mentioned I also had no luck with one cat and a product called 'keep off', which was supposed to deter the cat from a certain area. The spray only lasted 12 hours, so the next day, the kitty was at it again, tearing up the same spot as before. In that case, some cat attractors might be good. Putting catnip on the scratch post or toys or 'allowable' areas might take the cat's focus away from the places he's not supposed to scratch up.
Also, some cats like to have lots of toys and things to keep their attention. If they feel bored, they will get themselves into trouble for sure. Make sure you spend time playing with your daily, especially if they are needy and want lots of attention. Many times lack of toys or attention frustrates cats and they act out like that.
As a precaution, also keep your cats claws clipped short to lessen the damage on the things he likes to tear up! If you don't know how to do this safely (you must be careful not to cut too much b/c if you hit the vein your cat could bleed a lot), you should bring him to a vet to get clipped. DO NOT consider de-clawing as it is an inhumane procedure & extremely painful. As a cat's main defenses are it's claws, it will often become more aggressive after being de-clawed in order to defend itself (i.e growing, hissing, biting).
I hope some of these hints will be useful. Good luck with your kitty! If worse comes to worse, you can always replace your carpets & furniture with stuff you wouldn't mind her scratching (haha, I know, easier said than done!). After all, all those things are just physical possessions but your cat is a long-term friend
